Sessions & fees
No surprises: here's how sessions run, about cost and how everything is handled.
Sessions
Each session lasts one hour. I believe that's the optimal length for therapy — it gives us enough time to settle in and do real work without the pressure of the more common fifty-minute format. Most people start weekly and move to fortnightly as things settle. Appointments are available during the day and in the evening, in person in Midleton or by secure video.
Fees
I discuss fees individually when we arrange a first appointment, so everything is clear before we meet. If cost is a concern, it's always worth asking — a limited number of lower-rate places are kept for students and people in financial difficulty.
EMDR-based trauma therapy has been shown in research to achieve meaningful symptom change in fewer sessions than other approaches. That is reflected in the way that we'll work, and also in the fee structure. Most people will find the overall course of therapy shorter than traditional weekly talk therapy.
If your employer has an Employee Assistance Programme (for example through ComPsych), your sessions may be covered in full. Some health insurers also contribute towards therapy with an accredited therapist — keep your receipts.
Cancellations
Please give at least 48 hours' notice if you need to change an appointment. Sessions cancelled with less notice are normally charged.
Confidentiality
What you say stays between us. As an IACP-accredited therapist I work to the IACP Code of Ethics and attend regular clinical supervision, where client material is discussed anonymously. The rare limits to confidentiality — a serious risk to your life or someone else's, or a legal requirement — are explained at our first session.
Questions about fees or availability are welcome.
